wanted by law, saved by grace.

December 14, 2008

it’s amazing how time flies.

wanted camp
it was so different this time. instead of being a group leader i got to be part of the camp comm for the younger camp this year. a rare privilege i must say. being part of the camp comm allowed me to be in a position that was able to experience the camp in a way that i would have never expected. i truly believed that the messages shared in the sermons were really fruitful and touched the kids deep in their hearts; it was a pity i didnt get to listen to them. (was doing my part as part of the welfare team: buying bubble tea and what-nots haha) so i guess the other major part of the camp, which were the games and activities, was the area which i felt that i’ve gained from the most.

as a ”communist” in the game Underground Church:
i thought this game was over-used at first, not until i got to be in the position of the ”bad guy” aka the communists. when the game first started, i approached it like i was just touching the surface of a puddle of water with my little toe. i was wary, and i didnt know what to expect, until i saw how other communists did it. that was when i approached my first victim. it was weird being so tough on them at first, but as the game went on, it became second nature to be fierce and unreasonable and downright horrible to the kids. then i saw a young boy holding his broken specs in one hand, breathing heavily with his chest heaving up and down; he was crying. even in the dark i saw dried tear stains on his face, and fresh tears continued to roll down his cheeks. he was still crying in that hyperventilating sort of way when i pulled him to one side and sat him down. i was about to console him when one of the camp comm member’s words rung in my head, “no matter what, do not ever let your guard down or be nice to the kids. if you do so, then the game would not be successful anymore”.  i was in major dilemma. but it came to the point that he was inconsolable and for safety’s sake, he was taken out of the game to rest and recover.

that was when i cried, not outwardly though. i thought to myself, and cried out to God, “why on earth are we doing this? why must it take such a sadistic game for us to be aware of the situation thats happening around the world? dear God, please let there be a reason for all this.” it broke my heart to watch how we broke such a tender young heart. so i stopped for a while to think. i went to the torturer’s “den” (likened to a lion’s den), and simply sat there and watched the kids reacted. it was then that i thought of the consequences of abuse of power, and the length that humans were prepared to go and were capable of committing.

humans are scary isnt it?

but anyway, i guess the major point to take away from the game was to be aware of how we are so fortunate to be in a place that allows the freedom of worship/religion, and not only that, but to appreciate and treasure it. i know if taken at face value the game would be seen as “lame”, but i seriously hope that the kids in due time, might come to understand the true meaning of the game, just as i’ve had.

as “little red riding hood” during Character Chase:
HAHA this was really really funny. you shld have seen the PASSION and CONVICTION in the kid’s eyes as they hunt down each character to learn their respective ’powers’. they learn it like its a matter of life and death. man if they put in half of this much passion into studies getting 280 at PSLE would be a norm. well and i shant elaborate more on the character to save myself from the embarrassment. but anyway, i was kinda flattered when the little girls came up to me and said, “can i take a picture with you miss little red riding hood?”

so sweet.

i guess little girls will always be little girls huh?

the TEAM (:
what can i say. definitely one of the best and most committed team of camp comm members, ever.

rachel and samuel: thanks for being our wonderful camp commandants. its no easy task overseeing the whole thing, but you guys did. (:

esther and joel: our dear adam and eve! seeing you guys handle the programmes (and the mike) makes me see how apt you both are for this post. thanks for creating such a well-organised programme for us to enjoy. it seemed flawless.

charity and isabella and yane: what more can i say, thanks P&W team (: and charity and isabella, two crazy girls i got to know better through the camp! haha watching charity go high, and how isabella jumps when you pat her head…haha really fun to watch. (:
